Separate the components
Start with the product and its agreed packaging. Add applicable sourcing or coordination fees, samples and inspection. Then identify origin handling, freight, any agreed protection, destination charges, duties and taxes, and local delivery. Not every request uses the same components. Ask which party pays each charge and whether the estimate already includes it. A low freight headline can leave destination costs outside the number, so compare full scopes rather than isolated rates.
Label the uncertain inputs
Packed weight and dimensions may differ from the bare product. A chargeable volumetric weight may apply. Route, classification, required documents and relevant taxes need confirmation for the actual item. Record exchange-rate assumptions and the date of the estimate where relevant. Do not apply one duty percentage to every category. Ask what evidence would convert each provisional figure into a confirmed charge and when a revised quote needs approval.
Understand the per-unit arithmetic
Illustration only: a landed cost of ৳800 per unit and a sale price of ৳1,000 leave ৳200 before other selling costs. Gross margin is ৳200 divided by ৳1,000, or 20%. The markup on cost is a different calculation. Advertising, platform fees, returns, storage, unsold inventory and overhead can reduce the eventual result. This example is neither a market quotation nor net profit. Use the calculator below to explore the arithmetic with your own assumptions; no entries are saved.
Review the quote before committing
Keep a written version of the product specification alongside the quote. Confirm validity, scope, exclusions, payment milestones, cancellation and handover responsibilities. Ask how extra inspection, changed dimensions or a missed batch deadline would affect costs. A transparent estimate makes these questions easier to ask; it does not remove uncertainty. Compare alternatives using the same quantity, packing and delivery scope so the difference reflects the service you would actually receive.

Before accepting an estimate, mark every line as confirmed, provisional or excluded. Ask who is responsible for confirming packed dimensions, classification and destination charges. Compare an alternative only when the quantity and scope match.
- Product & packaging
- Confirm the exact model, variant quantities, unit basis and carton specification.
- Sourcing & inspection
- Ask which coordination tasks, sample costs and agreed checks are included or charged separately.
- Freight & handling
- Check packed weight and volume, chargeable basis, route and origin/destination handling.
- Duties, taxes & clearance
- Identify who confirms classification, required documents and item-specific applicable charges.
- Local delivery & exclusions
- Confirm the delivery scope, unloading arrangements, possible extras and quote validity.
